Flowers. So many people plant them for the simple beauty they provide, and they definitely do provide beauty. The colors and varieties can bring about some very deep emotion. Share a red rose to show love. Gladioli may be present at a funeral and help ease suffering, entire weddings are planned around beautiful bouquets of flowers and timed for the peak season. Lots of people have a favorite flower selected for any number of reasons. And for most people the favorite flower falls into an ornamental variety. As we grow our garden I am starting to enjoy the short lived flowers that say your food is about to be here. Tiny yellow flowers on a tomato plant, white flowers on a pepper plant, pink blossoms on a cherry tree. The shapes that accompany them are equally stunning. The flowers have a very specific purpose to attract the pollinators continuing the plant lifecycle. Planting companion flowers such as marigolds with tomatoes can actually increase your yield. The attract some of the best pollinators for pollination and predatory insects for common tomato pests. One day we will find some good companion planting for squash and the dreaded squash borer and one day we will have our own hives of bees for honey and pollination. But we remind ourselves it doesn’t happen overnight and it’s good to have a goal to work towards. But the flowers really are beautiful.
Seriously if you have any tips for the squash borer let us know.
