Few things are more rewarding than producing you own food. While the time involved varies with each type of food you produce it is a joy to dig (or pull in this case) your food out of the ground. As an added bonus the garlic we grew can also be used to provide relief from colds, insect bites and fungal growths. Our garlic will provide healthy and nutritious flavor for the coming months.
The journey with this batch of garlic started last fall. And is amongst the easiest of crops you can grow. The benefit of using a garden bed through the winter which would otherwise be left barren is a huge benefit in a limited space situation.
As with any home produced food the ability to select the types of food or experiment with different varieties is a major contributor. Unless you are willing and able to travel throughout your local region you won’t be able to get the varieties you can grow in your own back yard, and when you grow your own food you can control the additives and soil amendments( thanks chickens, rabbits and goats)
Once you find a variety or varieties that you like you can set some aside to be your starts for the next season.
As you go through your summer enjoying cookouts and family get togethers think of all the things you use garlic for and start planning your own garlic patch for the coming garlic growing season.
